A decade ago, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center virologist Dr. Keith Jerome began exploring the idea that lifelong infections with herpes viruses might be cured by using the DNA-cutting tools of gene therapy. Ramsay Hunt syndrome (herpes zoster oticus) occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears. In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox.

Hutchinson sign is associated with an increased risk of HZO. Recently, a paper published in the science journal Nature Communications reported that a team of researchers was able to eliminate over 90 percent of latent herpes simplex virus, which causes oral Kattah JC, Kennerdell JS, Orbital apex syndrome secondary to herpes zoster ophthalmicus, Am J Ophthalmol, 1978;85(3):378–82. Ramsay Hunt syndrome type 2, also known as herpes zoster oticus, is a disorder that is caused by the reactivation of varicella zoster virus in the geniculate ganglion, a nerve cell bundle of the facial nerve.

In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Herpes zoster (HZ), or shingles, results from reactivation of latent infection with varicella- zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. Anyone who has had chickenpox, even in subclinical form, is at risk for developing HZ. Reactivation of dormant VZV leads to a painful, maculopapular rash termed herpes zoster. When the rash is present on the tip of the nose, it is called Hutchinson sign. This implies involvement of the nasal branch of the nasociliary nerve and raises the concern regarding serious ophthalmologic complications 1 (uveitis, keratitis and blindness).
